DRYER VENT CLEANING – FOR A SAFE HOME

drye20smDRYER VENT CLEANING – FOR A SAFE HOME

It is very important to have your dryer vent cleaned once a year. A plugged dryer vent can cause your dryer to work less efficiently, which causes an increase in your utilities. Statistics also show an estimated 2900 dryer fires are reported in the U.S each year, and the fires have caused an estimated 5 deaths, 100 injuries and $35 million in property loss. 34% of fires were caused by dirty dryer vents, which were clogged with dust, fiber and lint.

A clothes dryer forces hot air through a turning drum. Wet clothes placed in the dryer drum, are dried by moving hot air and clothes around. Lint consists mostly of small fibers from the clothes and debris from in and on the clothes. While much of the lint is trapped by the dryer’s filter, lint is also carried through the vent system along with moist air. Lint is a highly combustible material that can accumulate both in the dryer and in the dryer vent. Accumulated lint leads to reduced airflow and can pose a potential fire hazard. In addition to the accumulation of lint, blockage in dryer exhaust vents can also occur from the nests of small birds, other animals, or from damages to the venting system itself. A compromised vent will not exhaust properly to the outside. As a result, overheating may occur and a fire is possible. Important to have dryer vents cleaned every year!
